Patios go green quietly. A patio that gets shade for part of the day, sits under a tree or backs onto a fence will hold moisture for most of the Suffolk winter, and that is all algae needs. By spring the stone looks grey-green, the joints have moss in them, and the whole area is slippery underfoot in the mornings.

Surfaces and materials

Method depends on the material

A concrete slab patio will take a firm, even clean with a rotary surface cleaner. Indian sandstone will not. Cleaned too hard, sandstone loses its outer skin, goes slightly furry and then soils again far faster than it did before — the patio looks better for one season and worse for the next five. So the nozzle, pressure, distance and pace change with the material, and condition matters just as much: hollow slabs, failed pointing and cracks are checked before anything starts.

Why some marks need treatment, not more pressure

Surface dirt, algae and moss sit on top of the stone, so water shifts them. Black spot does not. It is a lichen that bonds into the pores of the stone, and its holdfast sits below the surface you can see. You can hammer it with pressure and mostly succeed in eroding the stone around it, leaving pale pitting and the spots still visible.

The sensible route is a clean first, then an appropriate treatment left to work, then a rinse — and in bad cases a second visit. Rust marks, tannin staining from leaves, and paint or cement residue are also treatment problems rather than pressure problems. We would rather explain that up front than promise a patio will look brand new and hand you something patchy.

Shaded and awkward areas

Side passages, north-facing patios, areas under washing lines and the strip beside a garden wall are the spots that go green first and come back first. Cleaning them is easy enough; keeping them clear is about light, drainage and how often the area is used. If a patio has no sun and poor drainage, a realistic expectation is a good clean each year or two, not a permanent fix.
